10 places you should visit your first time in New York

Since we moved to New York a few months ago we have received a bunch of friends and family visiting us and they always ask the same questions, what should we visit? Which are the spots we couldn’t miss in our visit to New York? And we found the answers to be almost always the same. So here we left you the 10 places you should visit if this is your first trip to New York City. This is an amazing and huge city, but this is a good starting point to experience the city.

5th Avenue

We will walk many times through the 5th avenue in your trip to New York, but we recommend you to stop, walk it and enjoy it, especially if you like shopping. Besides in this avenue you will find iconic places of New York such as Saint Patrick’s Church, Rockefeller Center, Hotel Plaza, New York Public library and the Empire State among others

9/11 Memorial

In this place were the twin towers before the terrorist attack of 9/11 and this is a commemorative monument to the people who lost their lives in that tragic day. This is a nostalgic place but at the same time is peaceful and a place for reconciliation. Being here you can also visit the Financial District and Wall Street and we recommend you to go to Battery Park and see the sun setting there.

Museum of Natural History

If you have only a few days in New York and can only visit one museum this will be it. A wonderful place filled with history. You should take at least half a day to visit this huge place.

Highline Park

This park is pretty new, the first section open to the public in 2009 and the last section open by the end of 2014. The Highline was constructed by 1930 to connect the industrial part of the city with the port by train but with the automobile revolution it was abandoned by the 70’s until and the end of the 90’s a couple of neighbors send the proposal to build here this amazing and modern park. The old train tracks melt together with nature and concrete to give live to this monument of modern architecture. This is a place that you shouldn’t miss.

Grand Central Station

How many movies have we seen with scenes in this train station? This is a familiar place to anyone who have live under the Hollywood influence and as much as you have seen it in TV or in the theaters nothing compares when you enter the high ceilings garnished with the stars constellations and toped in the center with the clock ticket center.

Brooklyn Bridge

This is one of our favorite spots in New York and one of the most famous ones. It was built between 1870 and 1883 and at that time was the biggest bridge in the world. After crossing it on the Brooklyn side you should enjoy the Brooklyn Bridge Park and to eat something in one of the iconic places in Dumbo. If you have to go back to Manhattan you should take the Water Taxi, which will take you to 34 st by the East River for 4$ and would offer you a different take on the city.

Times Square

Hundreds of lighted advertising posters, Broadway theaters and thousands of people walking through here has made of Times Square one of the biggest icons of New York City. Here you will find most of the Broadway Theaters and if it is your first time you should come at night to experience to place to the most.

Central Park

Is without any doubt the most famous urban park in the world and one of the most visited ones with more than 25 million visitors per year. It’s twice the size of Monaco and it was inaugurated in 1873 as a green place for the New York citizens and still is the biggest recreational place for New Yorkers.

Statue of Liberty

It is with the Empire State Building the most iconic monument of New York City, “Liberty illuminating the world was a gift from the French in 1886 to commemorate the centenary of the Independence Day and as a sign of friendship between this two nations. It is a sculpture of the French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel. To visit it you can take the ferry in Battery Park or if you have a tight budget you should take the ferry to Staten Island that is completely free and goes by very close to it.
